Some rails to trails and some back roads biking. For information call Sally Stone 521-4062 or Betty Brown 636-4596 The hike for September is as follows Saturday, September 24 BRT from Pearly Springs to Steel Creek This is a 5.4-mile section rated ³easy to moderate² and has about 500 feet of elevation gains and losses. It features sinkholes and more views. There is a section of the trail that winds through and over bluffs that is a masterpiece of trail design and building. Maybe it will be warm enough at Steel Creek to swim and have a picnic. HERE’S THE BIG ONE—26 MILES OF BUFFALO RIVER TRAIL TO BUILD (By Ken Smith) October 9-22 Work Weeks—Two teams of volunteers from in and outside Arkansas will each have a week of trail work. They will headquarter at the group camping area at Buffalo Point. Others are welcome to join them at work and tent at their campsite during these work weeks. (visitors, however, need to bring their own food.) October 22-23 Carry-in—A third work team from out-of-state will arrive and move to the backcountry campsite to work on a remote stretch of trail October 24-28. These people will need help to carry trail tools and community kitchen equipment to their campsite. To lend a hand, come to the group camping area at Buffalo Point by 9:30 a.m., October 22. Walking distance to the campsite will be about a mile and a half, following a road trace in the woods. Or, if the river level is good, we can carry the equipment to the campsite by canoe. Our help will save the Sierra Club workers nearly a full day that they can use to build trail. October 29 Carry-0ut—Come and help carry the Sierra Club’s tools and kitchen from their backcountry campsite to storage at Buffalo Point. Meet the Sierra Club group Saturday morning, Oct. 29, after hiking or canoeing to their campsite. (Ken Smith can provide directions.) NEWS BRIEFS Lois J. Imhoff, 79, died on May 21, 2005 (by Ken Smith) Lois was the widow of the late and renowned University of Arkansas professor John L. Imhoff of Fayetteville who preceded her in death on March 16, 2005. They were both friends of founder Dr. Neil Compton and they were very active in the Ozarks Society’s campaign to save the free-flowing Buffalo River from destruction by the U.S. Army Engineer’s Gilbert and Lone Rock Dams. She received the Neil Compton award for her dedicated service. Lois was a member of the White River EPA of Northwest Arkansas and was on the board of directors of the Arkansas Wildlife Federation. She worked with numerous conservation efforts and she will be deeply missed. Mt. Sequoyah Woods Our Ozark Society Highlands Chapter made front page news on June 30th of this year when our president Terry Frederick presented to Dr. Pete Heinzelmann of the Fayetteville Heritage Association $1,000 toward the purchase of Mt. Sequoyah Woods. This effort will preserve this block of green space in its natural condition and for public use for perpetuity. Ivory-billed Woodpecker On July 13 of this year another momentous event took place at the Jones Center. Gene Sparling, who first spotted the bird in February of 2004 and Scott Simon, co-leader of the search and the director of The Nature Conservancy in Arkansas, made a present on the Ivory-billed Woodpecker discovery. There was a large turnout at this event and was attended by members of the Ozark Highlands Trail, Ozark Society, The Audubon Society and other nature loving groups were in attendance. It was inspiring to say the least.

Most of the contributors were either on vacation or otherwise out of town at the time I normally collect their material. And, to make matters worse, I’m having trouble understanding mail merge. However, this was the least critical publication of the year since we had no activities to announce for the summer anyway.
