Indian Creek (Mulberry) Access to Shop Branch, Tom McClure, hike leader, 6-7 mi bushwhack, difficult

Name of Hike: Exploring Indian Creek and Shop Branch

Type of Hike: Some trail and mostly bushwhack (non-trail hike)

Hiking Distance: 6-7 miles (2.5 mi trail, 4.5 mi bushwhack)

Elevation Gain/Loss: Maybe 500 feet

Rating: Difficult, some parts of the hike may be strenuous

Features: This hike will start on a spur trail of the Ozark Highlands Trail starting at the Indian Creek area by the Mulberry River. The hike will then follow the OHT for another mile. Then the bushwhack will begin which will include crossing Shop Branch several times-these should be rock hops but bringing hiking poles and dry socks is recommended. There will be encounters with wild and scenic areas.

Meeting Place and Time:

  • Meet at First Care Medical Center South , (2523 E. Huntsville Road) intersection of AR Hwy 265 (Crossover Road) and AR Hwy 16 (Huntsville Rd) at 8:00 am for an 8:15 am departure, or
  • Meet at 9:45 at the Indian Creek Trailhead on AR Hwy 215, 7 mi east of Cass AR by the Mulberry River
  • The hike will start at 10:00

Comments: Bring water, lunch, rain gear, gloves, and wear hiking boots. Bushwhacks are non-trail hikes which are generally more difficult than trail hikes. If you have never done a bushwhack hike, contact the hike leader first to find out about the challenges of the hike. No pets are allowed on any hikes, and children under 12 years are discouraged.

Liability Release:  Participants are required to sign a “liability release” http://www.ozarksociety.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/OS-Sign-Up_Sheet_rev4.pdf to take part in any Ozark Society outing. Everyone is welcome to hike with the OSHC, whether an Ozark Society member or not.
