Whiteley Creek Bushwhack (Boxley Valley), 6 miles, moderate to difficult, Rodger Keesee, Hike Leader


Name of Outing: Whiteley Creek Bushwhack (possible extension to Penitentiary)

Location:  Boxley Valley, Buffalo National River near Ponca AR

Date: Saturday, December 14, 2019

Type of Hike: Dayhike, Bushwhack (no trail)

Rating: Moderate to difficult. Hiking boots and poles recommended 

Hiking Distance and Elevations: 6 miles; elevation roughly 500 ft.

Features: Hike will be along and up Whiteley Creek. If the group is making good progress and it is not too late in the day, the hike may proceed to the Penitentiary which is very steep. This will be strictly Rodger’s call, and the extension to the Penitentiary will be optional.  The optional extension to the Penitentiary is difficult and strenuous due to steep terrain.

Meeting Time and Place:

  • Meet at Root Elementary School on Mission Blvd in Fayetteville for carpooling for an 8:00 a.m. departure, or,
  • Meet at Kings River Store in Marble AR at 8:45 a.m., or,
  • Meet at the Ponca Low Water Bridge on the Buffalo River at 9:30 a.m

Comment 1:  Because parking is limited at the trailhead, we will consolidate hikers into as few cars as possible at the Ponca Low Water bridge before proceeding to the trailhead.

Comment 2:  Bring water, sack lunch, and rain gear. Hiking boots and poles are recommended.  No pets are allowed on any hikes, and children under 12 years are not allowed on difficult hikes. Participants are required to sign a “liability release” http://www.ozarksociety.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/OS-Sign-Up_Sheet_rev4.pdf at the trailhead to take part in any Ozark Society outing. Everyone is welcome to hike with the OSHC, whether an Ozark Society member or not.
