THIS WEEK’s Outing :  (1) Trails at Ozark Natural Science Center and (2) Kings River Overlook

Day, Date:  Saturday, December 5, 2020

Name of Hike:  (1) Trails at Ozark Natural Science Center (ONSC) and (2) Kings River Overlook Trail

Type of Hike:  Dayhike; trail.  After completing hike (1), we will drive six miles to begin hike (2).

Location:  McIlroy (Madison Co) State Game Management Area 15 miles north of Huntsville AR

Hiking Distance:  5.0-6.0 miles total; (ONSC Trails, 4.0-5.0 mi; Kings River Overlook, 1.2 mi)

Total Elevation Gain/Loss:  No steep grades, around 250 ft total gain. (ONSC 150’; 100’ Kings River Overlook)

Rating:  Easy to moderate, due to distance. Most trails at ONSC are maintained with some uneven terrain and no dramatic slopes.  Access to Kings River Overlook is a relatively level, well-used social trail.

Features:  The ONSC was established in Bear Hollow as a 501 (c) (3) in 1993. Annually, ONSC’s school-based programming offers hands-on, experiential field science opportunities to more than 3,000 Arkansas and Oklahoma students.  Currently, the central campus includes three lodges, an education building, faculty and guest housing, and almost eight miles of maintained hiking trails.  Our hike at ONSC will take us past a flowing stream to interesting rock formations, bluff shelters, and historic homesites.  From ONSC we will drive 6 miles to our second hike to view the nearby Kings River from a high overlook.
