Highlands Chapter April Meeting: Wildflower Identification
April in the Ozarks is the time when many plants of forest and field break out their colors to show off who they are. Fields may be a carpet of yellow or purple, and forest floors come to life with a great variety of blossoms. A plant in bloom is not only beautiful but it’s the best time to identify them. So, for our April 9th meeting we are focusing on wildflowers and their identification.
Following are meeting details:
When: Thursday, April 9th, 2026
- 6:30 pm – Social Time
- 7:00 pm – Announcements & Program
Where: First United Presbyterian Church
- Upper Witherspoon Hall
- 695 E. Calvin Street
- Fayetteville, AR 72703
- For Google Map to meeting site see: 695 E Calvin St, Fayetteville, AR 72703 to 695 E Calvin St, Fayetteville, AR 72703 – Google Maps
Speaker and Topic: Sue Hubbard, Ozark Chapter President, Arkansas Native Plant Society
- “Wildflower Identification”
- Sue grew up in England but spent most of her adult life in California primarily in San Francisco and the Monterey area. She obtained a degree in Biology at San Francisco State and worked on riparian restoration projects before spending 2 decades with the Bureau of Land Management at the former Fort Ord military base near Monterey. There she supervised a crew that controlled invasive plants. While in the Monterey area she was active with the local chapter of the California Native Plant Society leading wildflower hikes and, for many years, giving popular talks on wildflower identification during the chapter’s annual wildflower show. She retired and moved to Eureka Springs seven years ago where she has continued her passion for native plants.
Hope to see you Thursday, April 9th. Arrive between 6:30 and 7:00pm.
Happy trails,
Peggy Bulla

Event Details
Saturday, April 25th, we will have The Buffalo River Classic, a day planned on the Buffalo River with hiking, floating and food. The “home base” will be the pavilion at Ozark Campground in Buffalo River National Park. Depending on float trip timing, we hope to serve burgers (veggie and beef) about 4:30 PM with potluck side dishes and desserts. Camping is available or one can drive over for the day.
Hikes: We need 2 or more Volunteers to lead hikes in the area. We usually have one hike going down river toward Pruitt and back, and another hike up river toward Cedar Glade. There are other possible trails nearby: Mill Creek Trail, starting in Pruitt, and Round Top Mountain Trail, just south of Jasper, and trails near Erbie and Parker-Hickman Homestead. There may be more I don’t know about. We usually start the hikes at 10 AM so people have time to drive over to Ozark Campground Saturday morning. For Volunteer hike leaders, the choice of where to go is yours. If you can lead a hike, please contact Judi Nail, our Spring Hiking Coordinator. jnail1113@gmail.
