| Location: Erbie Campground/canoe launch, Buffalo National River
Elevation Gain: 598’ ascent
Rating: Moderate with some sections of damp rock that can be slippery.
Features: Dating back to 1847 or ‘49, The Parker-Hickman Farm Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. The house and outbuildings are open to walk through. The Cherry Grove Cemetery with markers dating back to the mid-1800’s bear homestead family names and dates that reflect the Civil war and the difficulty of bearing children in the wilderness. The hike will start on the BRT by the Erbie canoe launch. The trail to Erbie Campground winds through moss-covered ledges and over limestone and chert of the Boone formation creating a landscape sometimes called a “city of rocks”. This area is the border of the Boston Mountains and the Springfield Plateau.
Note: The Erbie Bridge may be impassable from Compton. Drivers are urged to reach the trailhead from Hwy 7 through Jasper or Pruitt and turn north and follow Hwy 7 for the 5.5 miles to the campground by the river. After the hike, those who wish to may stop at Low Gap Café in Jasper for an apres-hike meal.
Comment: Bring water, snack, lunch, rain gear, gloves, and wear hiking boots/shoes. Hiking poles may be helpful. No pets are allowed on any hikes, and children under 12 years are discouraged and must be accompanied by a guardian. Participants are required to sign a liability release at the trailhead to take part in any Ozark Society outing. Everyone is welcome to hike with the OSHC, whether an Ozark Society member or not. We look out for each other, but you are responsible for your own safety.
