Highlands Chapter Dayhike: Home Valley Bluff
Bushwhack, strenuous, 5 miles. Terry Fredrick, Hike Leader
This Saturday Brenda Brown has arranged permission for us to cross private property to reach Home Valley Bluff,
where we will see waterfalls, the tea tables, a latin inscription, and much more. Terry Fredrick will be leading this 5-6 mile hike which is sometimes on an old road, sometimes a social trail, and sometimes no trail. The meeting place is at First Care Family Medical for carpooling and an 8:15 departure. We are being asked to sign a waiver by the owner of the property, so there will be 2 waivers to sign. Please see details below.
Saturday, February 9, 2019-Home Valley Bluff
Name of Hike: Home Valley Bluff – Bushwhack
Location: Ozark National Forest near Nail AR
Type of Hike: Bushwhack: Mostly non-trail with some social trail/jeep road.
Distance: 5.0-6.0 miles
Maximum Elevation Difference: 400 feet
Rating: Difficult, due to absence of trail, scrambling, uneven terrain, undergrowth, and high-bluff areas.
Features: This is one of the longest, continuous bluff-lines in the Ozarks. We’ll pass by the Tea Table rocks (seen in Neil Compton’s The High Ozarks: Vision of Eden, 1982 picture book), have long views towards Limestone AR in the valley, enter a cathedral-like bluff shelter, possibly see waterfalls, and marvel at Latin inscriptions (In gloria Patris et filii…) that were left by Spanish explorers on DeSoto’s Arkansas expedition (or possibly by more recent
pranksters). After hiking across the top of the bluff, we scramble down to its base to investigate Home Valley Bluff from below.

Everyone is welcome to hike with the OSHC, whether an Ozark Society member or not.
