Day/Date:  Saturday, November 15, 2025

Name of Hike:  Leatherwood Creek Hike

Location:  Ponca Low Water Bridge, Buffalo National River

Hiking Distance:  Approximately 3 miles

Elevation Gain:  150 feet

Rating:  Moderate although there will be creek walking, creek crossings, a little bushwhacking, and side-hilling.  Those who want to can go back from the Balanced Rock.

Features:  We will be walking along Leatherwood Creek going to Balanced Rock which is where the elevation gain begins and then on to the bluff shelter further up the creek.  It’s a pretty place to go.

Meeting Places and Times:

  • Meet at Root School, 1529 E Mission Blvd in Fayetteville, for an 8:15 am departure for a leaderless convoy and carpooling; or,
  • Meet at the Kings River Country Country Store in Marble AR for a 9:15 am departure; or,
  • Meet at the trailhead at the Ponca Low Water Bridge, Buffalo National River at 10:00 am.

Comment:  Bring water, snacks, lunch, rain gear, gloves, and wear hiking boots/shoes. Hiking poles may be helpful.  No pets are allowed on any hikes, and children under 12 years are discouraged and must be accompanied by a guardian. Participants are required to sign a liability release at the trailhead to take part in any Ozark Society outing. Everyone is welcome to hike with the OSHC, whether an Ozark Society member or not.
