| Linda and John Fordyce hiked with Steve and Meribeth Heye back when Maribeth was able to hike, over 10 years ago.
This outing is to honor Steve, who died last fall. Everyone is welcome to join and certainly people in the Ozark Society who hiked and paddled with Steve are welcome.
We have planned an expedition on April 11 (with backup rain day April 18 since it’s April in Arkansas) to Hare Mountain, which is the High Point of the Ozark Highlands Trail.
We will meet at 7:00 am at the McDonald’s at the Morgan Maumelle exit off of I 40. We can leave cars there and carpool. The trailhead and parking are at Morgan Fields, which is about a two hour and 20 minute drive. People can meet us at the trailhead at 9:30.
Enter Hare Mountain in either Apple Maps or Google maps, and it will direct you there.
Directions: take I40 west to Arkansas 23 (the pig Trail) and turn right/north, drive past Turner Bend and take a right/east on 215. Drive past Redding campground and then go left/north on Morgan Mountain Road. This will lead you to the Morgan Fields trailhead parking lot.
If you use Alltrails, you can download the Ozark Highland Trail or you can download Morgan Fields to Hare Mountain as a separate hike. The cell phone signal is weak so you have to download the maps to make Alltrails work (which requires a paid subscription).
Morgan Fields is at Mile 44.5 on the Ozark Highland Trail and Hare Mountain is at 42.8. There’s a good description of the hike in Tim Ernst’s Ozark Highlands Trail Guide.
We will do a ceremony. Anyone who can’t come and wants to say something, please email it to me and I’ll read it at the ceremony, rowings@mac.com.
