Mt Sequoyah Evening Hike

Date: Wednesday, September 1, 2021

Time: 6:15 pm departure

Meeting place: Mt. Sequoyah cross on Skyline Drive

Hike Leader:  Steve Singleton (contact hike leader for more information)

Contact Information:   s.singleton@cox.net or 479-521-7468

Directions: At the four-way stop at Mission Blvd  and Maple, turn uphill (east) on Maple and where it ends in two blocks, turn right onto Assembly. Stay on Assembly until it ends opposite the gates of the Mt. Sequoyah Assembly Center, then turn right onto Skyline Drive.  Follow  Skyline as it curves around the hill for roughly ¼ mile. Just before the cross on your right, there is a parking area inside the Mt. Sequoyah grounds on the left. Turn in and park. When empty, there is room for 12 vehicles in the lined spaces. If there are too few places, some can park nearby. I will be waiting there to direct traffic and suggest alternate spots as needed. Once parked, leave any after-party snacks/drinks in your vehicle and assemble at the cross, from where we’ll begin and end the walk.

Description:  This will be a 3.2 mile walk through the streets on the hilltop and western slope of Mt. Sequoyah. There are a few steep uphill sections and probably an equal number of downgrades. There are no sidewalks, so we’ll sometimes be walking single file and always with an eye on traffic, which is generally light in the area, but deserves caution. If you are unfamiliar with the neighborhoods, there are some interesting houses to see. If you are familiar, it may be a general exercise  walk. A half mile or so from the end, we’ll pass by my duplex, where anyone who wants may use the facilities—there are no open bathrooms near the cross. At the end of the walk, we can relax where we began, on benches by the cross. Sunset on September 1st is at 7:25. We should be back by then or soon after to watch the evening sky turn.  There is one picnic table, but several benches. A sign says that alcoholic beverages are not permitted, so discretion is advised. The cross is accessible by the public, so we may not have the place entirely to ourselves, but it shouldn’t be an issue.

Weather: Fingers crossed for cooler weather. We may reschedule if heat is extreme or storms are likely.
