Steve Heye is organizing a week long backpacking trip on the John Muir Trail. The permits are in hand and we have room for four more folks to join the five signed up. The hike will start with two days of acclimation in the Campground at 9200 feet on July 28 & 29.  The hike itself begins on July 30th and end on August 5th.  This is a rescheduling of the trip from last summer.

From Onion Valley Campground we will cross Kearsarge Pass and join the trail to head south. Over the next six days we will make our way toward Mt. Whitney. On day six we will hike up to the Portal Crest and drop packs to day hike up Whitney. Whitney is the highest point in the lower 48 at 14,500 feet. We exit the next day at Whitney Portal.

This Hike takes place at altitudes above 9000 feet. We will have 3 big climbs of 2000 feet or more on days one, three and six. We will be averaging six to seven miles each day. The trip total is forty three miles.

Planing for this hike is underway and you can still get in on training hikes and other planning. There is a maximum of nine persons in our group.
